Recording Chris Gray

Chris Gray of Violet Hour (Violet Hour Myspace ) was in the bay area for thanksgiving and I was able to snag some studio time for him. We tracked some vocal takes for a track "Sleepwalkers" he's working on.




We recorded in the SSL 9000 J Studio at Ex'pression College in Emeryville (yes, there's an apostrophe in the name). We tried out a range of mics, varying price range and format. We tried an MD421, AT2020, Shure KSM32, and Rode Classic II.

It was a quick, efficient session, just like I like 'em, and I think Chris came away with a good set of usable takes to work with in mixing.

This project he's working on is based in Brooklyn, New York, and it is a group to definitely pay attention to.
